Sleep No More
Sleep No More takes film noir as its aesthetic inspiration and is adapted to present Shakespeare's classic tragedy Macbeth. The Shanghai version is co-produced by the British company Punchdrunk and SMG LIVE, relocating the story at the McKinnon Hotel in the 1930s. A mysterious building in downtown Shanghai with 5 floors, more than 90 theatrical rooms, more than 3,000 drawers, as well as cinematic stage design, the McKinnon Hotel is another time and space where realities and dreams intertwine. Entering the McKinnon Hotel, the audience will play "ghosts" by wearing white masks to freely shuttle, explore, or follow the performers to feel the characters’ sorrows and joys at close range, experience the succession and transformation of the story firsthand, and immerse themselves in the interweaving of love and hate in the story with the companionship of desire and restlessness, intimacy and despair, creating a journey that belongs only to oneself in the depths of the film noir world.
With top production and performance, the Shanghai version of Sleep No More has created a new cultural phenomenon consumption in China. In addition to daily performance, the McKinnon Hotel holds various cabarets and immersive parties from time to time, such as immersive karaoke Rock Stars and the concert Desperate Flower, making it a legendary place for night life among trendy youth in Shanghai.
