On September 30, 1991, the Shanghai Traffic Radio was officially launched as the first professional traffic information media in mainland China.
Shanghai Traffic Radio works to relay governmental directives through radio waves, facilitating informational urban traffic management, contributing to the precision of governance in Shanghai.
Shanghai Traffic Radio has numerous innovative initiatives. For instance, it utilizes airships and helicopters to broadcast live traffic conditions, creating a precedent for dynamic traffic broadcast. It invites traffic officers to disseminate real time traffic conditions and set up a live studio within the traffic police headquarters. It collaborates with the traffic police department to broadcast and coordinate traffic during the F1 Grand Prix (Shanghai Circuit). Shanghai Traffic Radio also operates a live broadcast room at the Shanghai International Auto Show.
Shanghai Traffic Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day on FM105.7, covering traffic information, news updates, cultural entertainment and public services, etc. It also updates contents on major social media platforms such as Weibo ,WeChat, ,Douyin and Video Account.
Shanghai Traffic Radio is undergoing a digital transformation. City-wide traffic operation status can be monitored through the three major road network diagrams: urban expressways, surface roads, and highways in live room. High-definition images from over 30,000 cameras all over the city's roads can be surveilled and shared at any time, automatically generating a "Congestion index". Road emergencies are identified immediately and indicated by flashing icons, which is followed by predictions of changes in subsequent traffic flow. Operation information pertaining to subway systems, the water accumulation at overpasses under urban roads, and the extreme weather warnings and other civic activity advisories are all integrated as part of a data-driven, intelligent and accurate system. The lapse in relaying urban operation information has been shortened to about 2 minutes.
